Try selecting the entire message you are composing, and then...
Format Text > Paragraph > Paragraph Settings (which is the teeny-weeny icon in the lower-right corner of the "Paragraph" section) Then change "Spacing Before" and "Spacing After" to "0 pt". After you do this, you will able to manually adjust the weird paragraph spacing in your message.
