Outlook 2010 downloads emails but will not open page to view

When I open outlook 2010 on my windows 7 i get the individual message boxes showing that emails are downloading, my to do list also opens up, but the main screen does not so I cannot view any of the email items downloaded. Can anyone offer any suggestions please? thanks
