Default Yes, for an Exchange e-mail account

Do a "ctrl+alt+s" and set the number of minutes, make sure the box is checked and hit close.

Then go to Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings and make sure there's no check mark next to "Disable scheduled send/receive."

Instead of saying "This folder is up to date" on the bottom right, it will say "This folder was last updated at HH:MM."

I'm not sure if this will work with another mail server/application/service, but it works with Exchange. I imagine it would work with others, I've just never tested it. Good luck.
