Then, in Settings, I chose Microsoft recommended defaults', thinking that would solve the problem.

I can now open, for example, Concrete.docx. But when I try to 'Save', I get, 'Wordpad does not support all of the features of this document's format. Some content might be missing or displayed improperly'.
