Default Read-only file restriction on Office files

Have Office 2007 on Win 8.1 PC and Office 2016 on Win 10 laptop. Opening Office files from PC on laptop gives read-only. I wish to be able to edit the files on either machine. How to overcome read-only restriction?

You should check your Information Rights Management settings on the PC. See: https://support.office.com/en-US/Art...7-92a39b85e30c. If that's not the issue, how are you transferring the files?

I can find no IRM settings on the PC. On the PC (Office 2007) I get File\Prepare\Restrict Permissions\Unrestricted Access (checked; I didn't even know it was there) for both Word & Excel. If I click Manage Credentials I get an opportunity for a trial subscription to IRM. Still unfamiliar with most fine-tuning of Office 2016 (laptop) but can see nothing similar to the above Office 2007 settings. If I send a file from the PC to the laptop, I can then edit it on the laptop; if I use the laptop to fetch a file from the PC, it is read-only. (Using File Explorer in both cases.) Still confused.

On the problem system, open Word and disable Protected View. To do this, click File|Options|Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View>uncheck all options>OK.

Sorry, not OK. Both Word & Excel files open as read-only. Should have said earlier each computer is set to see the other's C: as a trusted location. Can fetch a Word file from the laptop to the PC, modify it, and save it back to the laptop; the file then opens on the laptop with the changes. Wish strongly to be able to do this in both directions. Should also add files transferred via sneakernet can be edited & changes saved; obviously sneakernet is a hassle & less desirable than direct connection.

It would have helped had you said from the outset that you're networking the two rather than transferring files between them. The problem, then, is most likely related to how you've configured the connections between the two, rather than being an Office problem.

The two see each other just fine on the network, but do not always display each other's C: drives. Sometimes the connection is fine, more often it is not but the read-only problem is a constant. By transferring files I meant via the home network through the Wifi router. Even when neither can see the other, connecting to the internet is not a problem. This has always been a snap with earlier laptops & earlier desktops. The two also show Homegroup categories for each other (but not always those categories' contents) but the same sporadic connections issues apply. Even when there's a good connection, the read-only problem persists. And each has been configured as a trusted source for the other. And if I run the troubleshooter on either machine, it reports "the network seems configured correctly but [the other machine] is not responding."

Is it possible this read-only problem is because I am still in the free month of Office 2016 even though I have elected for automatic renewal at the trial period's end? I only bought this laptop 2 weeks ago; Office was activated in the first day or two.

Further on how home network seems involved in read-only: networking problem goes away if SMB1 is disabled. Most files transferred in either direction are just fine and can be edited if needed. But File Explorer on the laptop displays directories/folders that are not marked on the PC as shared. Files can be transferred from these sources also, but they are the ones that remain read-only. Need now how to figure not letting them show as "shared" resources when they really aren't.
