In each application, go to File|Options|Advanced>Display and check the 'Show this number of recent documents' setting. If they're both set correctly, changing them might re-initialize the display. Failing that, you might try repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair).
