The version I am using calls it a placeholder but I think mergefield is what I am trying to place in my document. When I attempt to drag a mergefield into the document it will only go where the document's margins are set. I can only get the field to the location I want by adjusting the margins. If I try to place additional mergefields in a different locations they will only go where the margins I have previously set are.
