Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Programs & Features > Microsoft Office > Change in the Windows Control Panel)?

I have tried repairing word as you suggested but it didn't help, I thought I could do the same with Outlook before remembering its part of the suite and should be fixed by the same operation.

Do you have any 3rd-party apps installed (see under File|Options|Addins)? If so try starting Word in safe mode (hold down the Ctrl key whilst starting Word) and testing whether the mailmerge works there.
I also note from your profile that you're running Word in 64-bit mode. FWIW, MS recommends against this unless you really need 64-bit mode for Excel, the reason being that many 3rd-party apps designed to work with Office are not fully 64-bit compatible and are liable to cause crashes.

Sorry for the long period of silence. I had to let myself calm down before trying again
![]() So, now running 64 bit windows 8 Pro and 32 bit Office 2010. Had a couple of third party addins which I disabled. Still does the same thing. Word crashes as soon as it tries to access my contact list in Outlook. ![]() televet |

Did you install Win 8 as an upgrade, or as a fresh install, along with reinstalling Office? If you only did an upgrade, it's likely to have not fixed any problems with Office that the addins were causing. For that, you'd need to repair the Office installation (via Programs & Features > Microsoft Office > Change in the Windows Control Panel).
