Default Two versions of same file open up

Hi

I have an Excel workbook containing several sheets. I last saved it a week ago. On opening it this morning, I noticed that two files have opened up, both with the correct file name but one marked xxxxx:1 and the other xxxxx:2.

I have tried saving as another name and deleting the original but when I open up the re-named file, two versions open again, one number :1 and the other :2

I am at a loss as to how this has happened and how to change it. Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks.
