Based on Stefan's suggestion above you could try this.
MS Word stores ALL document formatting in the last paragraph mark of the document. So:
Open your document and turn on the show/hide button so you see all formatting characters. Then:
Select Ctrl+A to select the whole document.
Select Ctrl+SHift+LeftArrow (this will deselect the last paragraph mark in your document which contains all the document formatting).
Select Ctrl+N for a new document.
The save your new document and repeat what you were trying to do in your original document and see if that makes any difference.
