Default word 2010 not display math symbols correctly

I have been having this problem since several months, but i did not use word too much back then, but since my new semester at university has started, i am getting new problem sheets from my tutors and unfortunately, they do not display correctly in Word. I tried in both Word 2007 and 2010 but same problem. I am using Windows XP SP3.
Here is a screenshot:

Then, i decided to install the latest Open Office and opened the doc file and everything appeared as it should!

What should i do to fix the display in Word? Did i spend a lot of money for something that doesn't work? Looks like it.
