Word 2010 changes document
Apologies if this has been covered previously but I'm new, this is my first post. The problem is that I have set the defaults that I want for the normal template and when I create a document, it looks fine. However, when I save and close it and then re-open, it looks different. The main issue is the top, sometimes its so much lower that the whole thing looks silly.
If I save it in an older version, it keeps its shape but the computer doesn't like opening it. It does, but makes a noise and comes up with 'there was a problem sending the command to the program'. I think one issue might be I'm saving wrong. I have just installed Office 2010 and when I save I can't find anything in the list that says 2010 so I've been saving it under works 6-9 document, is this the right one? It's driving me mad! |

As far as the first issue is concerned, what is "lower"? Are you saying that the header area is missing, or is the text distorted, or what?
The second issue is probably caused by a problem with the file assocations; take a look at http://www.gmayor.com/document_not_found.htm.

Thanks for replying. What I mean is the margins seem to change on their own. For example if I choose narrow the top is 1.27 cm and the cursor is near the top of the page. When I type the document out, it keeps this shape. However, when I save and close and then come back to the document the text is sometimes way lower than it was when created. This only happens when I save it in work 6-9.

Saving in the Works format and then reopening the file, I can certainly reproduce the behavior you are describing. It might be a bug or just a compatibility problem with documents in the Works format.
Have you tried saving to RTF (Rich Text Format) instead? This format can be opened by many word processors.

That seems to work, thanks. Is there anything I can do to make office 2010 more compatible?

Generally, though, no two programs are fully compatible; that is, documents that contain anything more than the simplest text formatting will not be interpreted in exactly the same way in two different applications.

I think I wasn't supposed to be saving in works, that's just me being a beginner. I was trying that because if I save as a word document it saves as a 2007 document and I dont know why, I don't even have 2007. The computer saves it this way by default then doesn't like opening it, as I said in the first post. It does open but makes a noise with the problem sending the command to the program message. I dont know how else to save it, theres no option for word 2010.

Note that Word 2010 uses the same file format as Word 2007.
If you are using an old document as the starting point when creating new ones, Word will suggest the format of the old document in the Save As dialog box. In the dialog, you can change the format by selecting "Word Document (*.docx)" for file type. To verify that the format for new, unnamed documents (such as the blank document that displays if you start Word without double-clicking a file icon in Windows Explorer) is set to "Word Document (*.docx)," do the following: On the File tab, click Options. In the Save category, look at the "Save files in this format" option.
