Thanks for the response. I have used this site before but it doesn't address the problem I'm having. I have already set up all my styles and headings properly, but Word seems to be doing its own thing regardless. I think it's one of those things where something is overriding the command I'm giving it. I don't really understand how the heirarchy of commands works. You can tell it to do one thing, but it's below this other thing which takes priority. I'm not a complete novice; I've been using Word since it came out in the Windows 3.1 compatible version but it's sort of like the difference between being an expert driver and an ASE certified mechanic. I can make Word work for me, even if I have to force it or find some work around, but to set up everything perfectly so it works right everytime, that eludes me.

In my experience, Word can end up maintaining links to things it shouldn't. Someone brought me a document the other day that was having a similar problem. You might try selecting the offending heading, clearing both paragraph and character styles (Ctrl+Q, then Ctrl+Spacebar). If that clears up the problem, update the style to match that example. If not, delete the style list and recreate.

Thanks again. Yeah, I think I'm just going to have to do that - recreate the style list, I mean. It stinks, but it should eliminate the problem.
