copy and paste from MSWord without formatting

I belong to an email critique group for writers.
As we all probably know, MSWord is all about codes, so if you try to copy and paste into an email you get some funny symbols in places and it makes it very hard to read.

How can you remove the coding so the contents of a document can be copy and pasted into an email?
I have Word 2003.
