What you're describing is usually symptomatic of an under-performing display driver; it is also exacerbated in documents with many grpahics, simply because of the load it places on the system trying to paginate the document and render the images. You could try updating the display driver and, to the extent practicable, minimising the number of graphics in a given document (and the number of such documents open at one time).
