What you should probably be doing on the front page is inserting a Table of Contents, linked to the relevant headings in the document, rather than using an Index.

Leaving that aside, it is impractical to add forward/back buttons to each page in a document. What you can easily do, however, is add those buttons to Word's QAT (Quick Action Toolbar). To do this:
1. Go to Office Button|Word Options|Customize
2. Choose 'Commands Not in Ribbon' from the 'Choose Commands from' dropdown
3. Scroll down and 'Add' the 'Back' and 'Forward' buttons to the QAT
Once you're done, you'll be able to use the buttons to navigate document links in the same way as in Internet Explorer.
