I would like to edit text in a document by typing corrections or additions in the space between lines of the original document without moving the old text as I enter the new.



For example, if I triple space a document to enter corrections between the lines of the original text, the text on the next line of the original will move forward. Is there a way to enter text so this does not happen?

As far as I know, there's not an option that allows you to directly type text between spaces without moving them. What application are you using in Office 2007 please? If you're using Word, you can try:

(1) Inserting a text box on the line. You'll then need to change the wrapping for the text box to "Tight" and resize the text box to fit that area.

(2) Using comments instead. To add a comment, place your cursor at the end of the line you want it to appear. Select the "Review" tab and click "New Comment" under the "Comments" group. A comment box will open on the side, where you can insert the additions or text you want.

Not sure if this is answers your question...

The second seems to be the one. I will five it a try and will let you know.

The first would be too cumbersome editing 20 pages.

It is odd there is not a program that takes this style of editing into account.

I like to do it because I want the writer to easily see what text was altered and why.

Yes, that would be great if there were such a program! I can't think of any off hand.

If that's what you want to do, then you probably should use change tracking. Whilst this records your edits in-line with the text, it's quite easy to toggle the view between the original, edited and 'both' views. It also makes it easy for your document's author to accept/reject your edits.
