The Tab stops halted the problem thanks!
Some combination of playing with style settings/customizations must have caused a glitch. The same thing happened after "chapter 9" on a few new (test) Word documents. However on a new Word document when I changed the Style Set and re-added chapter numbering to it, the issue was gone... Thanks, Bryan
