Referencing text throughout a document

Is there an easy way to reference a text string within a document? For example, can a date entered at the top of a document be referenced to appear at multiple locations further into the document? I have tried to use "Paste Special" and sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. It also links it as a image, which is not the best for formatting.
