In text Arial 9pt or 10pt I use Create Hyperlink Here and get a hyperlink which is underlined - which I want - but in Arial 12pt - which I don't.
This is despite that the Hyperlink style automatically applied has no Font size: ![]() So how can I get Create Hyperlink Here to respect the current font size? |

What is the font size for the underlying paragraph style? Hyperlink is a character style and will use the font in the underlying paragraph style, not necessarily the underlying text or paragraph.

That's it! Thanks. I presume there's no workaround bar defining new para styles. |

Not necessarily new paragraph styles, just the ones that you need. Have them cascade if you want.

If a character style [i.e. Hyperlink] has had a size or typeface chosen and is not relying on those in the underlying paragraph font...
Once a character style has had a size or typeface chosen it can be ridiculously hard to remove that. The clue is to pretty much start again. Because it is a built-in style you do this by: Select a paragraph and press Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-Space to make sure there is absolutely no 'local' formatting in that selection. Then, show your list of styles and Right Click on the style 'Hyperlink' and choose 'Update Hyperlink to Match Selection'. This will effectively remove all attributes from the character style. Now, modify the style 'Hyperlink' to change its colour and add an underline. DON'T touch the size or typeface settings. That is it. Now, anytime you add a hyperlink it will automatically have the Hyperlink character style applied which should just change colour and underline without changing size or typeface. Red heading added by moderator for clarity.

Given that the solution to this is far from obvious without a thorough understanding of styles in Word, I've added this question and the solution to the troubleshooting section of my page on Styles with a link back here. Hyperlink Character Style not using underlying font
Andrew, with your permission, I will add something from your last post as well. |

For me, this is not working. It changes size - back to Normal. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by chrisjj; 09-26-2025 at 02:26 AM. |

Again, what is going on for you is that the default paragraph font size in the underlying paragraph style is set to a size different from what you are using. The Hyperlink character style has no size or typeface set; it picks up whatever is in the underlying paragraph style. It does not pick up direct formatting applied to the underlying or surrounding text. Change the font size in your underlying paragraph style; do not use direct formatting to change the font size for a paragraph or more of text. My guess is that it is the Normal paragraph style. Consider using, as your base paragraph style, the Body Text style rather than the Normal style.
