Default I Forgot How to Copy "My Toolbar" from a Desktop to a Laptop

I'm using Word 2000 on my desktop computer. All of my documents have a "My Toolbar" in them. It appears on the left side of the document's window. That toolbar has a lot of things that I use daily. When I open one of those documents and click Tools > Customize > Toolbars, I see My Toolbar at the bottom of the list.

So I just installed Word 2000 on my Windows 7 laptop and copied a few Word documents to it. When I open one of those documents and click Tools > Customize > Toolbars, I see that My Toolbar is not listed, and it is not displayed in the document's window.

How do I copy My Toolbar from the desktop to the laptop so that it appears in the toolbar list and also in the document's window?

That is not something that comes with Word. It is a customization, likely stored in your normal.dot file or a template stored in your Word Startup Folder.

For older versions of Word, up to and including Word 2003, copying the Normal template to your new installation should suffice. Or you may need to copy an add-in (*.dot) to the Startup folder.

If the new installation is a newer version of Office, it may or may not work as expected.

I tried copying the normal.dot file from the desktop to the laptop but couldn't get it to replace the Normal.dot that was on the laptop.

After mucking around with the laptop I finally was able to replace its Normal.dot with the copy from my desktop, but I couldn't recall what the final steps I took to do that.

Comes with age.

Thank you for helping me out!

If you want to replace Normal.dot with a different version, Word must be closed as you do that.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't try and replace Normal with a different template simply renamed as "Normal"; it must be an original Normal template, created by Word and customized by you or by someone else.

Hi Stefan,

I can't recall if Word 2000 on the laptop was closed before I copied normal.dot to the laptop. Could be that it wasn't when I first tried.

There's an Import/Export on the Customize the Ribbon part under File > Options, but that would bring you the program-specific settings like your QAT, not document-specific ones, as far as I can tell.

Moderator's note. This is for a different (Ribbon) version of Word.

You can always try again. I haven't experimented with this recently. Maybe Microsoft has made it more difficult to "re-use" the classical toolbars interface, even via a customized Normal template or an add-in.
