To be sure this is a problem with your Word program, itself, try starting in safe mode. Then use File Open to open your file with the links and try using one. Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC - Microsoft Office |

I have done it.
I opened a Word in safe mode and created there a link to pdf1 file and it shows the same warning that there is no program assigned. Then I created the link in normal mode and opened it in safe mode and it could not open it either. It shows the same warning. Does the fact that the same thing happened in safe mode mean that the problem is not due to an add-on? |
