Hello all,
I've only recently joined and have already benefited from some valuable advice from this forum - so thankyou all! I do however have a question. I produce a lot of reference documents for work and typically use the functionality from styles to generate a contents page with the corresponding ability to hyperlink from the contents page to the relevant content. I also hyperlink the titles of each section of my document back to the contents page as I work as an ISO 27001 auditor / tutor and find it easier to apply this functionality (and I almost exclusively convert any documents that I produce to pdf). My question involves the potential inclusion of a "back" navigation button in a word document. Through this forum I've added the "back" button to the QAT, however it would be oh so handy to have this function allocated to a button which either executes a keyboard shortcut, or performs the "back" function in the header/footer/border of a document - so that I can enjoy that functionality once converted to a pdf. Hope that isn't too wordy and thankyou in advance for any guidance you can provide. |

I would look at adding the Back button in the PDF rather than doing it in the Word document. Do you have a PDF editor?

Following up on Andrew's answer...
No button you place in a Word document will survive conversion to pdf, regardless of the method. If you are using Styles and creating an Automatic Table of Contents, by default the listings in the TOC will be hyperlinks. Most methods of converting to pdf preserve those. Also, if you are using built-in heading styles or outline level styles for your headings, conversion can make those pdf bookmarks. Here is a link to a pdf produced that way: Marlinespike Links https://addbalance.com/Sail/Knots/Li...rlinespike.pdf |

Hi Andrew / Charles. I hadn't thought of the option of adding it into a pdf - thankyou. Charles, also thanks for taking the time to answer - I use styles to link to the relevant sections in my document and then use use Ctl K to link back to them from the section. I think it would make for easier navigation if I had a back button though.

In the Windows versions, at least, the HTML back keyboard shortcut is active in Word and in pdf. That is Alt+Left Arrow. Perhaps you just want to put a reminder about that in your header or footer.
