Conflicting settings in a text range would display options as blank. Similarly, check boxes would display filled rather than cleared or selected.

Also, note that for any selection which is large enough, options that may be different in different parts of a selection will not display properly in Word's dialog boxes, drop down menus etc.

For example, you can have a whole document in Times New Roman, 12 pt, and you still see blank font and size options. See the screen shot.
