Hello, I’m using Office Pro 2021 and have a Word question regarding Outline Mode.

Is there a way to get Word to count how many Level 1 entries I have in an outline? If there is, what is the procedure?

For example, let’s say I have an outline that looks something like this:

1) Title

2) Director

3) Foreign

• Check Box Yes if Clicked

• Box Unchecked if No

4) Location

• a) External Hard Drive
• b) Micro SD
• c) USB Flash Drive

There are four Level 1 entries in the above list. Is there a way to get Word to keep track of how many Level 1 entries there are, and inform me of that amount?

There isn't a built-in function to do this but it would be possible to figure it out
For instance you could build a TOC with just that level and count the paragraphs in the TOC
The field code for a level 1 only TOC would be {TOC \o "1-1"}
You can then change the 1-1 to 2-2 for the second level only etc.

You could also create a macro to return a count of Level 1 paragraphs but that will be a bit more involved
