The whole point of that approach is that the document can be changed without it affecting the template unless intentional action is taken, e.g. checking the box marked "New documents based on this template" whenever it appears on a dialog.

Styles in a document can automatically be updated from the template if the "Automatically update document styles" option is checked, but this only updates styles that are marked in the document as in use, and it is considered bad practice to have this option on.
