How to do sequential numbers going down the column and then to right.
Hi Guys,
I'm new here. I'm not sure how to even search this. I make serial numbers using Brady LAT-11-747-5 labels. The are 20 down with 5 rows. I have the setup in word but other then changing each one individually, how do we have it start with lets say PHA-1000 and then count all the way to PHA-1100. There are 100 spots on this sticker sheet. What is the fastest way to do this going down the rows. I want them going down the columns sequential order. Sorry for spelling errors. Thanks, Tommy |

Hi Tommy,
Labels in Word are Tables. The order, normally is across and then down. There is no simple way to change this. You could use set up the label page, manually, as a five-column page, not table columns but section columns. Have a single-column table in the five-column page. The order will then go down the column to the end and then to the next column. You could use a SEQ field for your numbering an simply set the first number. SEQuence Field You could use Mail Merge with that as your primary letter-type merge document and an Excel spreadsheet as your data source. The numbers are in Excel. Mail merge using an Excel spreadsheet - Word Note, you are not using a label merge if you want your numbering vertically rather than across the page. Here is my chapter on Numbering in Microsoft Word. Here is my chapter on Tables. |

Hi Charles,
I will look into what you wrote. I appreciate it a lot. I did not think it was complicated like this. I use these programs often , but not often enough to learn all this stuff. Thanks, Tommy |

The simplest thing to do would be to accept the numbering going across the page and then down.

Merge the rows so your table has 1 row and multiple columns (on each page). It is harder to work out the spacing of the paragraphs but you will get the numbers running down and wrapping to the next column

See Merge Labels Using a Down-Then-Across Output in the Mailmerge Tips & Tricks thread: https://www.msofficeforums.com/mail-...ps-tricks.html.
The numbering automation can be done via either a SEQ field or applying automatic paragraph numbering. If you're not using mailmerge, simply add however many rows you need by pressing the TAB key repeatedly within the table you've created.
