Styles don't stay when copying and pasting within same document
When I copy and paste within the same document, the styles formatting changes. I noticed this only happened after I changed the names of the styles. I had an older original document that maintained the styles when I copy and pasted, but once I did this new save-as document and renamed the styles, they no longer stay so that I have to click on the style again up in the gallery box to fix it, which defeats the purpose of doing a copy and paste. This is not numbered formatting, just basic font changes, like bold and size changes. When I copy and paste, it reverts to a blue Calibri Light font, the kind that looks like it's default with Word. It retains the bold and font size, but the color and font name changes. The box to change automatically is NOT checked.
Also, this is Microsoft 365, but it didn't have an option to choose this. |

Does your copied text include the paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph? If not, then you haven't copied the paragraph style settings so when you paste, the text may change to align with the paragraph style settings where you are pasting.

Yes, it is ending with the paragraph mark. But I definitely know that's not the case, because the entire file should not be using any blue font or that font. When I set up the file, I did a select-all and changed the font to a different one than the one it's reverting to. This is also why I think it's reverting to a default Word setting. |

I've attached the Original (the one that does not change the formatting) and the New (the one that was a save-as and changes the formatting). I did a copy and paste at the end of each document to show what it does. So on the New file, you'll see the blue.
If it helps, turn on the navigation panel (under View). Here is a screenshot: Example Screenshot.jpg .. |

I have tested your Example New document using Microsoft 365 and am unable to replicate your issue.

You are apparently changing things.
Your source document is formatted with Heading 1 style but your New document is formatted with lorem ipsum3 style. That doesn't happen by accident unless you are doing a Paste Special as text only. I do note that when I opened both docs, they both appear the same colour (Auto), typeface (Cambria) and size (20pt).

Why are you being so accusatory? Like I want to waste my time by making up a problem. 1) Of course I changed things to protect private information. Which was suggested by this forum. 2) If you'll read my original post, it said the issue happened only after I changed the style names. There were no issues with the original ones. |

Are you seeing the blue at the bottom? |

Only if I copy the blue text at the end of the document. Otherwise, neither the font nor the colour change.

I also note a number of differences. The formatting may look the same in the two documents but is not.
Copy and paste in original document: pasted text is same. Same thing happens with new document; pasted text is the same. In neither case is there blue or a change in the font. Any chance you've different paste behavior options in operation? This is a Word setting rather than a document setting. No one is accusing you of anything. We are telling you what we see. |

I literally copied the style and just renamed it. Copy and paste in original document: pasted text is same. Same thing happens with new document; pasted text is the same. Odd. Do you see the screenshot? That's what is showing up on mine. In neither case is there blue or a change in the font. Any chance you've different paste behavior options in operation? No, same, just right click and copy and paste. I tried it multiple times among the two documents. Even tried doing a save-as of the new document a few times and those didn't stay either. Only the original stayed (with the unchanged style names) remained correct. This is a Word setting rather than a document setting. Yes, so how do I fix it? It looks like it's reverting to default Word settings. No one is accusing you of anything. We are telling you what we see. Just him, no one else was doing that. |

Odd. So if no one is seeing this but me, is something wrong with my computer? Or my Word?

As Charles suggested, look at the paste options at File > Options > Advanced. In most cases, leaving the factory defaults will lead to more predictable results.

Hi, sorry, it's been busy.
I'm still having this problem. I've found out more clarifying things about this. This problem only occurs when I RENAME the style name (using the Heading styles). If I just copy and paste using the default name, this does not happen. What is happening is when I copy and paste, it reverts to some other settings, the blue font color and different font (as shown in previous screenshots). So I have to go and select the style again to fix it. But that defeats the purpose of the copy and paste when I have to redo everything. When I go to check the settings, they show what they're supposed to be (black, new font size, etc.). So the settings are not matching what shows up. I need these styles in the different names that I'm changing it to. I need the heading formats so it has a dropdown in the navigation pane. Thank you. |
