Missing style number in the styles pane
Word 16: I have three heading styles that I created. Heading 2, Heading 3 and Heading 4. In the Styles pane, Heading 1 and Heading 2 display correctly, but Heading 3 displays as Heading '. The number 4 is missing. How can I get the number to display properly? |

It would be a major help if you upload a screenshot of what you are seeing. Otherwise, we can only guess.

Actually, what would help most would be to attach a document with the styles.

You cannot actually create styles named Heading 1 - Heading 9, which are built-in styles. You can, though, modify these styles.

Style pane picture
a picture of the styles pane is attached. In the 4th style down the 4 is missing. It should read Heading 4 which is the correct name of the style.

In your screenshot it is possible to see the first part of the 4.
It looks as though you have Show Preview turned on. What do you see when you turn it off? |

Again, attaching a document with the styles would help.
What shows up in your Quick Styles Gallery on the Home Tab? (You may have to drop it down.) There are lots of ways to access styles in Word. Styles QAT Add-In (gives you access to many style features regardless of which ribbon tab is displayed) |

Show preview off
with show preview off, the 4 is visible. But I prefer to have it on to see what the style looks like. No way to fix the problem with show preview off?

It appears that the preview is showing that the bulk of the number is being cut off and it may have something to do with the left hanging indent or possibly a frame width setting you have on that style.
Can you attach a sample empty document so we can see the style settings for Heading 4? There is also a Style Pane Option which hides the built-in name when a style has an alias. Can you verify that Heading 4 does not have a style alias?

Options
Have you tried pressing the option button and choosing "all styles"
This is a new trick I have learned recently. Last edited by marikoko; 01-23-2024 at 07:59 AM. Reason: Added attachment |
