Default I am set for English UK and "flavoured" is marked as misspelled with "flavored" suggested.

Word 365

In Options, the language selected for authoring and proofing is (correctly) English (United Kingdom).

However, when I spell check, Word highlights flavoured (the English UK spelling) and suggests flavored (the English US spelling).

How can I make the spell-checker use the language I have selected ?

Thanks

  1. Click in that word in your document.
  2. Look at the status bar.
  3. What is the language?
Proofing language, in action, is set at the level of each character in a document, not word, not paragraph, not document, and not application level.

I know that the spell checking dictionary for English UK allows some US spellings, but I do not know of it marking any UK spellings as mistakes and suggesting the US spelling. I just checked on my system and flavoured is not marked when English UK is the proofing language.

Proofing language can be pasted into a document and much web content pastes in as English US.
If your Windows language is English US, that will override your settings in Word.

Thank you !
That was the issue - but now I have a second obstacle !
The language in the status bar shows English (United States).
When I click on that I can choose English (United Kingdom) and I click on Set as Default and then OK.
However this does not work - the next document I open has English (United States) in the status bar.
I've restarted Word, in case that was necessary - no difference.
Any further ideas please ?

PS1 In Options . . . Language . . . Office authoring languages and proofing . . . "Manage languages used for creating and editing documents, including proofing tools such as spelling and grammar check" . . . English (United Kingdom) is set as the preferred option.

PS2 The individual styles used on the document are all set to English (United Kingdom) but pretty much whatever I type or do, sooner or later the language reverts to English (United States) I've even tried removing English (United States) as a proofing language - but that doesn't work either.

In Settings (Windows 11) . . . Time and Language . . . Language and Region . . . Preferred languages . . . two languages were displayed, English (United States) at the top and below that English (United Kingdom).
Using the 3 dots beside English (United Kingdom) I promoted it to the top of the list, restarted the PC and now a blank Word document opens with English (United Kingdom) as the proofing language shown in the status bar.

And now, ater a Hibernate, English (United States) is back again !

I'm out of ideas.

Well I didn't expect this !
I contacted Office 365 support and, after much experimentation, they did the actions below, which fixed it.
Windows 11 . . . Settings . . . Time & Language . . . at the top there is a section "Windows display language" which was set to English. The technician added a new language "English United Kingdom" which had to be downloaded, signed out of the PC etc.
On re-starting I was able to set the default proofing language in Word to English (United Kingdom) and this time it has remained set (I hope !).
