Default Page No 1 changes when subsequent Page No formatted as continuous

I've produced a book with different sections for the opening pages and each chapter. I had it set up to begin chapter 1 on page 1 and everything flowed from that. Then I had a problem with converting to pdf. Where I had one blank page the pdf produced 2!! I seem to have overcome that but in the process I first lost odd page numbers, then lost all the page numbers. Don't ask me how!

Then, when I formatted the page No on chapter 1 to start at 1, no other page numbers appeared. I entered a page No on page 2 and set it to continue from previous. When I did that Page number 1 changed to 3 (continuing from i, the Acknowledgements page and ii, the Forward page). I switched off link to previous to no avail. No page numbers are now showing up throughout the whole book!

Please help, somebody. My hair is in a pile on the floor.
