Hi, I am a teacher, and I would like to create a textbook for one of my classes that will include text, pictures, and video. I know how to insert each of these into a Word document, but I am searching for a way to lock some of the content on each page to prevent students from accidentally deleting something. If I wanted to prevent all changes, I could just convert the document into a PDF, but then students would not be able to watch the videos. Does anyone have a suggestion, or is it just impossible to do what I have proposed?

You can protect a document from being changed. You can even specify parts that people can edit, and parts they can't.

I don't know where it is in Word 2008, but in 2010, it is the Restrict Editing command on the View tab.

I found the Protect Document option in the Tools menu--is that the same thing?

Probably. Try it out.

If you were on a PC, you would also have the option of using Windows security, which is really simple to do.

Word also has a save as HTML option. It actually works better in older versions and has been gradually phasing out in newer versions. But if you want text and working videos, HTML may be a good option. This has the other important advantage of students being able to access your book on computers that don't have Word.
