Default Suddenly Unable to Group a Circle to an Image

I have an image in a Word 2000 document. I selected the image and drew an oval around one of the words. I would like to group the oval with the image so the oval will always remain in position with the image. However, when I select the circle, it gets unselected when I hold the Shift key and then select the image.

I have done this successfully since 2000 but now I can no longer select more than one object at a time.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm sorry but I no longer have Word 2000.
I can't imagine there have been changes to it in the last ten years.

Around one of the words in the image?

Try placing your image in a Text Box and then grouping your shape with the Text Box.

No, there haven't been any changes in it. A shorter description of my problem is:
  1. I insert an image, then select it, then draw a circle or a line in the image.
  2. Next, I select the circle and handles appear around it.
  3. I hold Shift down and click somewhere in the image. That causes the image to be selected but the object to become no longer selected.
The last time I did this was around 3 years ago and I can open those old documents and add text boxes to their images, and regroup the text boxes with the image.

I've been using Windows 10 since 2017, and I'm thinking that sometime in the recent past something in the Win 10 updates has changed that affects Word 2000, but I'm not sure.

Maybe another person can chime in with suggestion???

Would you care to attach a document with the problem?

I suspect that one is classed as a Shape (your circle) and the other as a picture and they are in different layers. That was why I suggested putting your picture in a textbox (perhaps one without any border) and then adding your circle. The textbox and the circle would be in the same layer.

Thank you for replying. The problem was with me. Everything is actually working the way it should. False alarm!

I had been inserting a picture into the document and then drawing something on top of the picture. When I added a paragraph above the image I noticed that while the picture moved down, the added graphic did not. At least not right away.

Now I see that I have to wait a second for the added graphic to "catch up" with the image.
