What happens if you start Word in safe mode?
Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC - Microsoft Office

On my computer with a fairly wide screen, the Pictures icon has been relegated to a drop-down position under Illustrations.

Thank, Charles. In Safe Mode the ribbon looks the same. The problem is there's no Illustrations group at all in the Insert tab here.

How can I include a screen shot here? I t5ried pasting it in but it doesn't take.

Check Customize the Ribbon and see if it has been inadvertently removed. Add it.
