how to get single line spacing?

I have win10 and word 365.





have this doc i want in plain vanilla style: single spacing.



all the advice I found was to go to para spacing and set single line. well I'd already done that and it made no difference.


and I exposed all formatting marks and I see nothing at the end of one line but it continues beneath at a distance of double space.


the document was a pdf I need to edit so I opened it in word which converted it into a word doc.


It has this 'double space' feature and yet it also has some single spaced lines.


They are apparently single spaced because I've set nil para space and each one has a para mark at the end of it.


how do I best get this doc into single space so's I can work with it?


I'll attach a bit of a screenshot so's you can see what I'm talking about.

It may be a 'Style' issue.

Try selecting the double spaced text then select a different 'style' to see if that changes the spacing. If it does then that identifies it as a style issue. You can then see what style the other text is in and change the double spaced text to that same style.

Word is a Style-based application. You should learn about and use styles.
Importance of Styles in Word

Here is an example of changing the Body Text style to be single spaced within a paragraph and between paragraphs.

1. Get to the Modify Style dialog (right-click on the style in the Styles Gallery or Styles Pane).
2. Click on the Format button and...
3. Pick Paragraph.
4. Change the space before and space after settings to 0.
5. Change the line spacing to single.
6. Click OK to get out of the paragraph formatting dialog.
7. Click OK to get out of the style modification dialog.

If you want this for all of your documents, check the choice for "New documents based on this template" before you click that last OK. (It is between the 2 and the 7 on the screenshot.)

If you are a regular Word user, I recommend, strongly that you learn some of its basics. It will save you a lot of angst and perhaps some hair.

As Charles pointed out, there are two types of spacing: spacing within the lines of a paragraph (= Line Spacing) and the spacing between paragraphs (= Spacing Before/Spacing After).

In this case, make sure that you set the Spacing Before = Spacing After = zero.

Note that "Single" Line Spacing is defined by the font you are using. For more control, you can set a fixed value. Choose the "Exactly" option for Line Spacing. Some trial and error may be required to find the appropriate value.
