Default Deselecting Header once headers are created (Headings?)

I am having an issue in word where when I create a page header to be used as part of table of contents I can't deselect the header to proceed to type the rest of the page in normal. Once I create the header for the title of my chapter and hit enter to start typing body of my 'normal' page style selection just jumps back to header 1. Selecting Normal 1 doesn't seem to take as soon as i start typing it reverts to Header 1. Any help on this appreciated.
