Microsoft and Word will use default American dictionary. For UK dictionary then you have to add a Uk dictionary. Have you added any UK dictionaries?

I was going to suggest you check the settings Wiganken is showing in the previous reply.
I'm on a newer version of Word, but to get there in any of the ribbon-based Word versions, I think it's the same. File/Options, then find Proofing from the left hand menu, and look for the "Custom Dictionaries..." button. If you don't have a Custom.dic file established, maybe it wouldn't let you write to it. - Ann |

It doesn't matter what the dictionary is called. You can only add words to the default dictionary and then only if the language of that default dictionary matches the language applied to the word that you wish to add, or is designated as a dictionary for all languages.

So someone has to agree that a word should be added. Even if am an american (NOT) and I want to add a word. Why not. It could be a bronx slang word. WHY NOT. If A word is not in the MICRSOFT dictionary, how does it know it is not an american slang word or if it is even american? is there a hidden dictonary of allowable words to add? OKAY. I Belive I set this to UK. SHOW ME HOW. |

To be able to add to the dictionary you need to access the correct dialog.
File > Options > Custom Dictionaries. Set a custom dictionary that refers to all languages and make it the default. The language of the text determines which built-in dictionary is used. You cannot add to a built-in dictionary.

You are adding to the Custom.dic file. See the link I gave you previously. See also: Proofing Language Keeps Changing - Solutions - How can I keep my proofing language from changing?

Firstly I do not have
File > Options > Custom Dictionaries File > Options >[Recent | OneDrive | This PC | Add a place | Browse] Secondly when I insalled office 2016, I set the languge to English (UK). So it is not the built in American custom dictionary. I have tested it out with words spelt diferently in Amercan. Do I have add an additional dictionary as well as the American and UK dictionary. Also this is a home computer not connected to any network. Also when you add to dictionary, you definatly do not add to custom.dic. Word creates a seperate file for words added. |

This has nothing to do with proofing tools. You can buy these from Microsoft for Spanish, Italian etc. I am talking about the English language. Americans don’t speak it. It has ALWAYS been possible to add to dictionary. Nothing to do with proofing tools. English (USA / English (UK) is not for proofing tools. Add to dictionary has always been a Microsoft Standard. You clearly don't understand proofing tools. |

Again, look at Mastering the Spelling Checker by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP. That is the best source of information about how the spelling checker works.
You cannot change the actual spell checking files that come with Word. You can add words to your custom dictionary. You can note words that Word thinks are spelled correctly as incorrect by adding them to an Exclude file. The base file remains unchanged. If the base file is incorrect and you would like Microsoft to change it, use the feedback mechanism. The proofing language that is used for your text is stored in character-level formatting. I explore this in my article Proofing Language Keeps Changing - Solutions - How can I keep my proofing language from changing? So, this can be different from document to document, and indeed from letter to letter. If you paste text into your document as anything other than plain text, it can carry such settings with it. |

Charles says
You can add words to your custom dictionary. I say you can't as add to dictionary is not an option. That is what I have been saying all along. Right click > Add to dictionary It dosn't get more basic than this. |

You are saying that the command is missing from the right-click menu?
