Also maybe the default normal.dotm template has become corrupted? If you delete the template then Word will automatically create a new one. See if that fixes it.

Please, never, EVER, advise anyone to delete the Normal Template. It is often the repository for valuable resources. Renaming the template will accomplish the same thing as deleting it, without the risk of losing such resources.
