Field, XRef, Link, Mail Merge? Not sure what I need.

Example: I have a phone number that appears in several places throughout my Word document (Office 365). If the phone number is changed, it should update in all the places it appears in the document.

I also would like to do this across separate Word documents, but my primary desire is to make it work within a standalone file.
