The most obvious thing you are doing wrong is not listening to good advice about using Content Controls. We only have a couple of experts on this forum who bother with Ask and Fillin fields so you don't have that many people who can help you.

If you want focused help, you should post a sample template that demonstrates your problem and what you've done so far.

Speaking for myself, I'm not interested in building something from scratch, using functionality superceded over 13 years ago, just to get to a point where I can experiment and solve a problem that is only applicable to my assumptions of YOUR document setup.
