In your sample document, it was not an ActiveX button but rather a hyperlinked shape. With Ctrl+Click it works.
If you have a screentip, it will give instruction to use Ctrl+Click on mouseover. As far as I can tell, this works best if your shape is placed as in-line-with-text.
