Default

The last button on the Home ribbon tab is Select. It drops down and you can choose to Select Objects. This allows you to multi-select shapes either by lassoing or click + Ctrl-Click

Word is not a drawing tool so this functionality is rarely used and I guess that is why Microsoft didn't bother making this button more obvious.
