How to ALWAYS use Browse dialog?
In Office 2019, it is annoying that when using Ctrl+O, it brings you to the Recent list. just want to go straight to the good old Open Dialog (Browse). How do I change this behavior in Office? Great if there's a keyboard shortcut for it. |

There is an option.
File > Options > Save Check the box to not use backstage with the keyboard shortcuts for Open and Save Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 05-09-2020 at 09:55 AM. Reason: resize image - make more readable |

Even with that enabled, when I open new doc >> type gibberish, delete it, exit Word >> it will still show this:

What have your two posts to do with each other? It seems to me one concerns file opening, the other concerns file saving.

apologies for not being clear. they are unrelated. 1st part is addressed. 2nd part is when closing without saving - I don't want that backstage dialog to appear.

So what do you want to happen with you try to close an unsaved document? Do you really want to lose all your edits?

Problem with new dialog - focus is not on the buttons, so I can't use keyboard shortcut to exit. |

Umm... with the dialogue in your screenshot, Alt-s to save & exit, Alt-n to exit without saving?

When saving an untitled document for the first time, you can use F12 (or Fn+F12 on some keyboards). This will display the classic Save As dialog box.

Believe me, you WANT that prompt before closing Word if you have unsaved changes in a document.
Unless you use Undo to get rid of the text you just typed, Word is not smart enough to realize you didn't really make any changes. |

Correct. Deleting changes is not the same as undoing them.
