Default Word iOS app does not show some characters

The Word iOS app shows some characters as special characters, but only sometimes.

An example would be when I write the date such as 26th (only it is superscript in the Word doc), the number sometimes appears as a special character.

It does not always happen which doesn't make sense.

You can see the results in the attached image from the Word document and the iPad.

Any idea on why this happens, and can I prevent this so that the intended characters appear on the iPad app?

As a comparison, this does not happen in OneNote.

Thanks
