Here is a screenshot of a single-cell table with an image and caption. This one was set for wrapping around. In moving the table the simplest thing to do is to grab the table handle (in the red circle). It does not snap to locations on my computer.
You are correct that you don't get to watch the text move out of the way. It will still give you documents somewhat less prone to corruption.
