I am writing a book that I split into 5 files. Each file contains about 200000 words. When all files are open the computer gets very slow. I have a very powerful computer. And only recently have I felt this phenomenon. Although I have been working this way for several months. The book contains only text without images. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome it?

Doing all of your formatting through Styles can make a big, noticeable, difference.

Section breaks and manual page breaks can also make a difference. How many sections in each document?

10 section break.
When I work on a single file everything is fine.

It seems that moving from draft view to print view solved the problem.

Interesting. I would have expected the opposite.

If you are using Direct Formatting, do review the links on Styles.

I am a very basic user, not so much the master of the styleS
i begain to write with PowerPoint and switched to Word few months ago.

Read, at least, the part on the Importance of Styles. Styles are central to Word documents and using them well will make your working in Word much more pleasant.

I can't imagine writing a book using PowerPoint; designing a cover, yes, writing the book, no.

A text only file with 200,000 words is not excessively large so running 5 docs like that shouldn't tax the machine too heavily.

If your documents a full of local formatting or Tracked Revisions this might be adding memory overhead that is slowing you down.

The intent for Draft View is that it is quicker than Print View so it is interesting that you found the opposite.

i dont have Tracked Revisions. but i think that local formatting is the problem. because some of the pages i made with my cellular phone.
i will try to read about it and let you know.
yesterday Word used 700 mb of RAM.
today i see it use only 200 mb.
my computer has 16 gb RAM. with grafic card nvidia quadro k2200.

I cleaned all styles and now everything works fast. Also in draft view.
