Can't remove page numbers.

[FONT="&amp]I have no idea how it happened but Page numbers appeared. I keyed, "[FONT="&amp]Remove page numbers" into search and the following appeared. I followed the instructions but there was no change made.[/FONT][/FONT]

• [FONT="&amp]Onthe View menu, click Print Layout.[/FONT]
• [FONT="&amp]Onthe View menu, click Header and Footer.[/FONT]
• [FONT="&amp]Selectthe page number, and then click the frame around the page number, so that theresize handles appear.[/FONT]
• PressDELETE . Note: To remove page numbers from part of a document, divide thedocument into sections.

Please make a copy of the document, delete any private content leaving only a few pages showing the problem, and attach it to your next post.

I don't know how I did it but I started to edit the doc which was 1,500 pages in length and after a couple of changes I noticed that both the page numbers and the lines that went across the pages where I didn't want them had gone. I suspect that there is a device that allows one to get into the doc and check what happened but I don't know how to use it and I'm satisfied anyway but thanks for your help.

Double-click the header area to activate the header/footer view. Then click to select the page number and delete it.

I got as far as opening "Page numbering" and where Remove Page Numbers is shown there is a small red cross on it. Whatever I do I can't dump it.

Stefan has given you the solution. You should only have to do this on a few pages (up to three per Word section).

The Remove command has limitations. Explicitly selecting and deleting the page number will be safer and quicker.

Stefan is recommending that you select the page number (field) in the header/footer and delete it using the Delete key, not the menu command.
