It turns out that these were "Comments" that got added as I was editing the document. There were 3 of them! I can't, for the life of me, figure out how I could have, inadvertently, added all 3, without realizing it! |

Are you familiar with the Track Changes functionality? Assuming yes, and the comments are coherent, then someone who used the document before you got it probably added them—Word identifies the commenter via name or initials.

I'm afraid not.
My first word processor was Word Perfect and I've never really gotten comfortable with MS Word, partly because I don't use it very much, except when I need to write business letters. Quote:

The default shortcut for inserting a comment in Word is Ctrl+Alt+M.
There is also a shortcut for activating/deactivating tracked changes: Ctrl+Shift+E.
