Default Macro will not save to normal.dot file when exiting

I have been able to write macros that work just fine however they will not save when closing word. running word 2003 and XP-professional SP3 and all updates. anyone know how to fix this glitch it formerly worked just fine as macros written during a Word session were saved to normal upon exit. thanks for your time.
