Is there something like 'Previous versions' available on the Mac? It keeps old versions of files, if enabled.

Is your Word set to make a backup copy every X minutes?

It's a good idea to save whenever losing content would be painful. You can always 'Save As' to keep different versions if you don't have Previous Versions.
